What's even more annoying is when these articles post a picture of two moons around Earth, and make the "other moon" look about the same size as our moon.

Im glad he said that, i was getting annoyed at all of the news outlets and science based channels calling it earths "new moon".

Yes, finally! Thanks Neil. Reminds me of when people say ''scientists are back at the drawing board!" 😆

As exciting as the idea is. I'm glad for the clarity. I guess my question is: whats the minimum amount of time an object has to orbit to be considered a moon? Clearly not one rotation. But does it have to achieve perfect orbit? Or is there a minimum time frame? Or if a body will leave in like 300 years is it not a moon? Not demanding clarity. But now im wondering about these questions!
Thanks for the clarification Neil!

I think it's interesting that in theory we could capture and redirect things to orbit earth, maybe for mining purposes.

Dear young ones of tech age

I need a gif of Neil saying, "I'm not about clickbait here. I'm about objective reality." Please! Man I'll use that on every fb post for a week.

I'm calling it an intern moon. If it does a good job at getting Earth some morning coffee, it might get a full time position in our orbit.

Its simple Pokémon rules, man.
If you don't capture it, its not yours.
(Edit: I suppose it could be traded or gifted to you, but our celestial neighbors are rather stingy about their moons.)

What’s even funnier is that it’s only 33 feet wide 😂

Thank you, Neil. And what I am wondering is why the Harvest Moon looked so little and far away. Usually, it is big and bright, and you can see all the landscape. Farmers could never have harvested their crops by this moon!

This new moon thing is very similar to me and my crush. She's in my vicinity, I'm trying to pull her in but I haven't quite captured her yet

AMEN!!! Precisely what I said the moment I saw “new moon” in titles and headlines on line!!!! Love this scientist’s ideas, proofs, and logic.

As someone who follows the cycles of the moon to predict her periods and ovulation times, I refuse to let anything else in our orbit dictate my biology.
