πŸ˜‚If it ever went out, nobody would be allowed to tell anyone. It would be re-lit and the show would go on, with nobody any the wiser.πŸ™Œ

It was invented by George Stephenson, a commoner. Davy took the credit because he was part of the Royal Society, but the invention belongs to George Stephenson,

Isn't the Davy lamp kind of solving a different problem? Like, the Davy lamp is supposed to keep the flame from escaping, while the focus of the Olympic flame is to keep it from going out, no? So like, if you put it in a standard Davy lamp, it wouldn't be protected from, for example, the wind blowing it out, right?

Me (an intellectual) put it out then relight when you get to the destination

I remember when Superman blew out the Olympic flame to show how evil he was.

Seems more like a storm lantern to protect against wind, instead of this.

It seems that we have a lot to thank Humphrey Davy for. He was also a pioneer of anaesthetics, and advocated the use of laughing gas in surgeries.

In my humble opinion, the two devices are very different ; the first is a miner's safety lamp, the second seems more like a wind lantern (which does not prevent a flammable gas deflagration). In order to transport the olympic flame, a wind lantern should be perfectly adequate .

I am 100% sure the lightbulb at my local fire station has been turned off less times in the last century than that flame has gone out

I was lucky enough to hold one of the London Olympic torches (there were a few) when I looked at it though it was actually just a modified weed burner in a fancy facade, although ive heard it was actually made from camping stove parts

Wow it’s truly amazing how Humphrey made such a great invention all because of his love for miner- wait hold on a second

You can surprise your friends by activating the gas of a lighter right under some semi thin cloth (table cloth, semi thin curtains, whatever) and lighting it from above. If done correctly, the cloth cannot catch on fire, even though there's a flame dancing on top of it.

Cool safety feature

that appears to be more similar to a hurricane lantern than a safety lantern. which would make more sense because the hurricane lantern is also designed to keep the flame from going out
