The difference is someone who already had a shit life and gets libation from that through the fantasy world even if being the chosen one is dangerous, and someone who had a comfortable maybe even happy normal life that doesn’t want to lose all that for some mystical stuff that’s likely gonna get them killed

The key is subtext and character arcs. If blue protagonist's biggest fear is making herself vulnerable to new experiences and helping other people, shes going to absolutely hate being the chosen one. Thats Katniss's whole Hunger Games arc (at least in the first book). Honestly a 'chosen one' protagonist whos willing to throw themselves into danger (even with the benefits) is super hard to pull off, because the 'chosen one' trope is inherently founded upon the extraction of a character from their comfort zone/'real'/'ordinary' world and entering them into a new, destined path. The trope is quite literally the urge to fight destiny in favor of staying in the comfort zone, otherwise the 'dark chosen one' reversal wouldnt work. (Speaking of Chosen Ones, I highly recommend Dark Rise. The third book isnt out just yet but GOD i wish it was)

The difference between a character that starts in a happy place and wants to refuse the call and a character that starts in a bad place and answer the call because has lead them to the best people in their life.
