Always respect the dog owner ā especially service dogs because these dogs are trained to do a specific job. You are distracting the dog when you offer them treats, pet or call to them.

And this is why when I see a cute doggie I smile and say āhello doggieā or āyou have a cute dogā and LEAVE it at that. I make a conscious effort to especially not touch a strangers dog! I know thatās not what this mail lady did, just reminded me of that š

You did right by brushing it off! Some people just dont get it, its not just service dogs its any dog, what if they had allergies or something! Been in similar scenerios plenty of times with my service dog and we just were polite but then moved on! ā¤š

What I'd have done is ask the owner if it's ok to give it to him/her or if not then if he/she wants it so they can give it to their dog

"Omg he's allergic to those!" When she tries to save the situation, you come back with "this is exactly why you don't feed an animal that doesn't belong to you without the owners permission." Let her worry that she just tried to kill your service animal.
