Like many, I woke up today feeling the shock and frustration of the U.S. election results. To me, Trump’s win reflects the anger and disillusionment of everyday Americans facing economic hardship—high costs, stagnant wages, and worries over job security. Millions feel unheard, frustrated, and unsupported.

What many Americans don’t realize is just how far behind they lag in basic worker protections—rights we take for granted elsewhere. Paid leave, sick leave, the security of knowing you won't lose your job if you need to care for a loved onea and of course universal healthcare with the NHS. It’s brutal, and it’s no wonder people want change. But without understanding these rights, they’re looking for relief in the wrong places.

For real progress, Americans need to recognise the gap in worker protections and start organising for better conditions. Large corporations and Trump’s billionaire supporters may resist, but history shows that change begins when people unite for dignity and rights. And it can happen - look to Tim Walz's Minnesota where from January 2024 workers can accrue paid sick and family medical leave.
