As opposed to what some have said, that's an M1903 Mark I, and yes, that is the cut out for ejecting the .30 Pistol casings for the Pedersen Device. M1903A1 came after WWI.

Fun fact in the magazine cut off switch if you have five rounds in the magazines you can put one more round in the magazine and close the bolt then switch it back to the normal mode and you have 6 rounds one in the barrel and five in the magazine.
