You can tell ChatGPT to include dice rolls for checks. I agree that it asks what you will do and just gives you the win

I did this too! It was actually a blast. I told it I would roll all checks and report it, and I made it share its DM rolls which forced it to use a RNG, it seems. Had the same issue with difficulty, but got a bit better over time.
Regardless, it was a fairly fun experience

I’ve found it’s more of an interactive story than playing DnD. Which has its own fun. Including instructions that your character/characters won’t win every fight or argument and that they will need challenge and adversity helps mitigate the default you win programming. But it’s not going to really be a game you played, it’ll be more of a story you experienced and helped create.

I've been using it to run an anime-esque game for my son where he's in an MMO... and it created it's own system for the in-mmo mechanics lol. But you are right it took a few times giving it feedback to get it to stop including the player's words and action, including pauses for dice checks, and giving "GM Prompts." It feels more like a choose your own adventure book with some dice rolls now, and it will react accordingly if you give it stuff outside of it's GM Prompts so you can still breakaway from the choose your own adventure feel. The boy seems to be enjoying it so I am letting it do it's thing now.

The prompt you give it is incredibly important. I work with AI and I use it for DnD, my players love it!

Like others are saying, if you want it to ask you to roll dice, you will likely need to include it as part of your initial prompt.
Prompt creating is very important. I think it will help people in the future give clearer instructions to each other as well. 😆

I like using chat GPT for brainstorming character ideas. I can start with race and class and go to full backstory. It is a fun thing. It sometimes gives interesting suggestions that can be turned into actual ideas.

So ChatGPT is not great for running a game, but for pre-game prep he is helpful for writing faster and having something to bounce ideas off of.

You have to train the AI first. You have to teach it things like "Youvmust make me roll for checks often, such a when needing to percieve or sneak" and telling it to make various different difficulties to tasks. Once you give it a proper prompt, ChatGPT is actually really really good at playing the DM. I have one bot that i use for short adventures on lunch breaks and i have another where ive been playing a campaign for a few months.

There's a dungeon master assistant gpt that I had run a scene with me for a solo session with one of my players, and it knew to have me roll checks.

I've had the same issues. I tried several ways to use a gpt to run a story but it always falls short. I'll give it another try soon but usually it's better for bouncing ideas off of or generating content on the fly like names, towns, stores, characters, traps, ect.

Before you begin you need to set the instructions for chat gtp with maximum clarity how to treat you, what level of expertise to use, hallucinating or now, every detail. Than it will follow it. In default mode it is horrible.

Uh I hate to burst your ample bubble bud but at it's core that IS what dnd is, "writing a story together" the dice are just because with so many people it helps with deciding what exactly happens lol

Maybe you want to try AI Dungeon. Some were unforgiving
