That's literally the defining feature that separates cats of the subfamilies Pantherinae from the Felinae. "Big cats" is kind of a misnomer here as Cheetas and pumas are "big cats" but can purr but not roar. The exception seems to be the Snow Leopard who have partially ossified hyoid structure. So despite tigers being their closest relative, snow leopards cannot roar.

Apparently (according to long-time keepers) Tigers make an "uff-uff-uff-uf" sort of chuffing noise when greeting someone they know and trust. Absolutely adorable. But I too prefer the humble house cat's purr, or purrs as they have different ones for different purposes. Honestly, deciding to study Ethology has been a highlight of my life, it's an endless source of wonder.

They can't roar, but they sure can growl. I have lived with house cats almost my entire life, and yet only with one I adopted as recently as 2020 had I ever heard one growl. There's really no other word for it, either, it's a low rumble that's distinct from purring, and she's done it when agitated by outside cat or someone at the front door.

Imagine the added hell of trying to sleep when the cat's having their 2am zoomies if they can roar
