MAGNESIUM AND STRESS
I have good news.
When we talk about stress, psychological stress often comes to mind.
However, chronic diseases such as atherosclerosis, hypertension, and diabetes are fundamentally physiological.
Cortisol levels, known as the stress hormone, increase as a reflection of the body's struggle with chronic disease.
As a result, certain changes occur in our bodies.
Increased cortisol levels:
Fatty acid synthesis increases. Blood lipid levels rise.
The risk of blood clots increases. Even if the atherosclerosis is low, a clot can lead to complete blockage.
Blood sugar levels rise due to the regeneration of glucose from other sources and the release of glucose from liver stores into the circulation.
Fat accumulation, starting around the belly, will appear and accelerate.
The renin-angiotensin-aldosterone system, responsible for long-term blood pressure control in the kidneys, is activated, and blood pressure will remain permanently elevated.
Steroid hormones like cortisol can work positively to some extent, but then they start working negatively, creating a vicious cycle.
The good news is that if you're taking magnesium, human studies have shown that elevated cortisol levels in long-term magnesium users decrease after six months, based on end-products in their urine.
There is data suggesting that by reducing physiological stress and cortisol, the risk of long-term cardiovascular disease may be reduced.
If you're taking magnesium and are at risk for chronic disease, continue taking it.
