Beta Richard looks like an old grandpa and I think the writer and art directors probably decided that this look wouldn't really fit or receive well with audiences so they changed it to the pink fat rabbit we know today

The reason why they change richard into a rabbit becuase they wherr thinking to add annais as a rabbit but they realise if annais is the daughter of richard and nicole and she is a rabbit nicole is a cat richard is a dog so uhh change it

I think it is for the american family stereotype: overworked mother which scares everyone when angry, the fat father who acts like another child, the kids, one being chaotic (in this case two) and a smart one; mostly the yougnest
