Main reason we donāt have higher level judokas in the US is financial IMO. Really love judo but if I invest the same amount of time and effort into another field I can and do fairly easily make a healthy six figures. I doubt if iād have ever reached the point where i could live the lifestyle I wanted and not be stressed financially if I had gone with judo(especially by my mid 20s). Still do it for fun but I treat it as such and donāt intend on taking it any farther than that. Would love for some one to bring over foreign high level judokas for us in the US to train with!! Had my former sensei bring down canadianās in the olympic program regularly always made for great training.

I'll tell you how the British did and now get access. Originally they had Japanese running things until it was appropriated. They would also annually send high academic potential Dan grades to Japan to further their studies. Now the Japanese send their Champions when they retire to study at Bath University. But after Kenshiro Abbe the English became too invested into purely sport. But it was never put into highschools like in France, Spain and Russia. More Japanese come to the UK to promote Aikido than Judo annually.

I usually support your stance on many things, Higashi-sanā¦ but man, cry me a judo riverā¦ for once the mighty US economic power cannot crowbar its way into sportive significance, what a scandal.
Suggestion to any US Judoka with a competitive spirit: Learn a few foreign languages, connect and align with international structures, foster friendships despite the language barrier, go for the beauty of Judo outside that precious yet limiting āeconomic microcosmosā (not everything you do well must automatically yield profit, you know)ā¦ in essence: step back from that profit-oriented American mentality and just do it for the sake of doing it.
Only once the US let go of pesky economics they can truly embrace and value international Judo competitions ā and through that have more domestic international champions to learn from.

There are so few high level judo practicioners in the US, that they probably don't have much time to dedicate to help passing on the knowledge of the sport. Eg. Kayla is busy with MMA, Ronda WWE or whatever. Even Jimmy and Travis have full time jobs working for merch company Fuji. In Japan, there are literally thousands of champions and former high level competitors still training, willing to teach the next generation and, most importantly, PAID properly by the IJF to do so! Unlike in the USA!
