You are a dedicated Judoka that loves everything about Judo. You train hard at your local dojo even though the facility is not great and there are not that many people to practice with. One day, you get an opportunity to drop in at a local BJJ school, and it's a completely different experience. The facility is brand new with working showers, and there are always tons of people to roll with. You don't want to, but you can't help but ask the question, "Man, why does Judo suck?" In this episode, Shintaro and Peter discuss this provocative question. Why does Judo suck right now, and how can we make it not suck?

There are so few high level judo practicioners in the US, that they probably don't have much time to dedicate to help passing on the knowledge of the sport. Eg. Kayla is busy with MMA, Ronda WWE or whatever. Even Jimmy and Travis have full time jobs working for merch company Fuji. In Japan, there are literally thousands of champions and former high level competitors still training, willing to teach the next generation and, most importantly, PAID properly by the IJF to do so! Unlike in the USA!

Main reason we donā€™t have higher level judokas in the US is financial IMO. Really love judo but if I invest the same amount of time and effort into another field I can and do fairly easily make a healthy six figures. I doubt if iā€™d have ever reached the point where i could live the lifestyle I wanted and not be stressed financially if I had gone with judo(especially by my mid 20s). Still do it for fun but I treat it as such and donā€™t intend on taking it any farther than that. Would love for some one to bring over foreign high level judokas for us in the US to train with!! Had my former sensei bring down canadianā€™s in the olympic program regularly always made for great training.

I'll tell you how the British did and now get access. Originally they had Japanese running things until it was appropriated. They would also annually send high academic potential Dan grades to Japan to further their studies. Now the Japanese send their Champions when they retire to study at Bath University. But after Kenshiro Abbe the English became too invested into purely sport. But it was never put into highschools like in France, Spain and Russia. More Japanese come to the UK to promote Aikido than Judo annually.

I actually love judo for that because they are like less than 60000 ppl who do judo in a country of 330million ppl so its kinda like our own little club.

This issue is unfixable. Judo is very niche and not accessible in general compared to say BJJ

You can find Judo champs in Quebec Canada , Nicholis Gill for example. Canada has been doing Judo 30 years longer that America and it is very well orginised here and Judo clubs can be found in every province in Canada .

This is a sad thing, because Judo is more beautiful than B.J.J. . šŸ˜‰

I'm glad that Judo doesn't have that micro economy culture like BJJ. What those guys charge for a 1 hour seminar is almost criminal. The videos are okay since you have it forever when you buy just need a good Uke to practice with. You know mutual benefit and all.

I usually support your stance on many things, Higashi-sanā€¦ but man, cry me a judo riverā€¦ for once the mighty US economic power cannot crowbar its way into sportive significance, what a scandal.

Suggestion to any US Judoka with a competitive spirit: Learn a few foreign languages, connect and align with international structures, foster friendships despite the language barrier, go for the beauty of Judo outside that precious yet limiting ā€˜economic microcosmosā€™ (not everything you do well must automatically yield profit, you know)ā€¦ in essence: step back from that profit-oriented American mentality and just do it for the sake of doing it.

Only once the US let go of pesky economics they can truly embrace and value international Judo competitions ā€” and through that have more domestic international champions to learn from.
