My Craftsman Briggs & St 5.5hp mower would start but rev up and down and sputter constantly. I used two kinds of carb cleaner including SeaFoam with no success. So, I found my diaphragm carb kit 495770 at my local O'Rileys Auto for $3 plus tax Following your video, it's now running smoothly. Thanks for saving me a repair bill of $35-$40 and giving me (at age 70) a feeling of accomplishment.

Excellent video. My brother gave me a mower about 50 years ago that had this same B&S carb on it and I took it apart and replaced the diaphragm and fuel tube and it lasted me 15 more years until I purchased a self propelled Snapper. Gave it to a friend. Mowers will last a very long time with regular cleaning and sheltered storage.

i think valves. but then i remind myself KISS. [keep it simple stupid ] then i check air filter ,then i check fuel filter. then ckeck other fuel restrictions. then the govenr springs . then and only then do i remove any parts like carb and use rebuild kit. if you can adjust spring tension [touchy] try it, but most likly u will fuck up the OEM springs.

Great video! Just a regular homeowner not afraid to try a fix. He focused on clean: clean, clean, clean. That's important. Cleaning out that well is important, that's where the carb draws its fuel from, right there. Don't lose any gaskets, and make sure those are clean. Its all about air leaks, and that's what was happening to William, the diaphragm/gasket assembly got old and tired and leaked air into the system. Do it like he did it and you should be fine. Remember, the diaphragm goes to the tank, the gasket on top, and snug the screws holding the carb down to the tank using a star pattern. Oh, one thing you might want to do, while the carb is off the tank, hold a straightedge across the top of the tank where the carb mounts. Make sure that's nice and flat.
