I've been doing this since i first saw these from Make. Also they have some really cool $3 (on clearance) light up wood houses for the holidays that I use in my DND town. Used some of the Halloween and Xmas ones.

For the felt lining, you can get adhesive felt sheets. Thinner and won’t have the glue seep through the felt.

You can also stain the wood if you don't like how solid paint can make it look.
