If you’ve never seen a ww2 submarine hunter plane work it’s pretty cool, they set a sonobuoy that can hear underwater propellers from submarines and other noises from it and they put 1 in the middle and 4 in a box around it and based on which they can hear they know where the sub is going and when it pops back up they depth charge or bomb it. There’s actual audio out there where you can listen to these missions happen. Hearing the sub then bomb explosions then submarine breaking up sounds. Later floating wreckage and oil popped up the next day and they took a picture. Submarine hunting was like playing chess trying to anticipate the subs move and try and bait them into surfacing again

Well... everything he had to say was true. Except for the "...and if we're within... *you can see the gears turning in his head 'Oh wait... Shit! I can't tell them that. What do I say now?' ...a very close distance of the submarine!" Yeah, that's totally it... 😅😂😅 "A Very Close Distance..." That's it, Very Close...
The publicly available numbers give the range of the Mk 46 ariel torpedo in service during this man's service as 11

LAMPS Aircrew in the house! WESTPAC 74-75. Tonkin leading up to evac of Saigon . ASW was a fascinating and intense field of endeavor I found to be most enjoyable and satisfying. To me it was somewhat like mixing hunting and fishing together, and we were ALWAYS hunting and fishing for big game, sometimes at zero dark-thirty, in the middle of some ocean, chasing a distant acoustic contact, alone and far away from your ship and you are on your own if you go down. Believe me, it was a RUSH EVERY TIME, and I'd do it again today yet if given the opportunity. What a ride!👍🙏👍
