I know this is satire but the new ranger has less flavor to the class. It feels like a weaker fighter with less abilities and features. With the hyper focus on Hunter's mark, it limits spell usage. It may not be worse but it isn't better.

Keep Hunter's mark not being a concentration spell.
Keep the greater number of spell slots.
Throw out everything else and stick with Tasha's updates.
You now have Favored Foe, Hunter's Mark, weapon damage, and a d8 with certain subclasses. Have fun throwing that many dice!

It is worse. They striped out all the flavor and thematic elements of the class and replaced them with Hunter's Mark, a tier 1 trap spell.
Ranger needed a rework far beyond copy pasting the Tasha's options that didn't grant decent bonus spells.
I'm fine because I already rewrote the ranger so they pick from the mana colors from Magic the Gathering instead of picking creature types, terrain, or hunter's mark, and gave them travel/exploration pillar features that mesh with the Web DM book Weird Wastelands. I also was only planning on buying third party books after the OGL fiasco. Mike Merles being a creeper didn't help their case, but at least they eventually fired him.

As a dm i usually make concessions for rangers just because the ideas cool but it just sucks

2024 ranger is stronger than the 2014 one, it's just that compared to all the other classes that got buffs 2024 ranger is now even weaker than 2014 was compared to other 2014 classes. I hope that wasn't confusing.

I watched all the new class videos on the official DND channel. All classes got lots of love. Rangers got huge improvements. So they seem better now. They are much less situational now than they used to be. As I recall these two things happen. One is that rangers get to change their preferred environment during a long rest. Thank goodness. Hunter pets are also a lot more uniform with fewer stat blocks. That prevents things from being too convoluted. As a recall, druids got similar improvements. They get fewer stat blocks in their wild shape. Circle of land druids get to changed preferred land during a long rest.
