The life force that’s driving your story needs constraint, so that you can make sense of your story world and not be all over the place.
A way to constrain your story is to use mythological representation, like the Moloch that is eating babies.
A Moloch stands for the idea of devouring the future in favor of the present by throwing babies into the mouth of the Moloch, because babies are pure potentiality and Molochs are the force that eats potentiality, mythopoetically speaking.
When you have a strong force driving your story, you write something that feels less mechanical or analytical.
