From my recital at Tonhalle Zürich, here’s a snippet of Fauré’s Sonata No. 1, 1st movement

WHAT MAKES THIS SONATA SO SPECIAL (according to Fauré’s former teacher Saint-Saëns)
🎶 use of new forms
🎶 excellent modulations
🎶 unusual tone colours
🎶 unexpected rhythms

Gabriel Fauré's recognition as a great master of French chanson came late, and it was this Violin Sonata No. 1 that marked a turning point in his career. 💪

Like many timeless compositions in the classical music repertoire, the critical response from publishers was not enthusiastic at all. 🥺 In fact, its uniqueness and harmonic originality shocked Parisian music publishers, who rejected it right away. 😢 Breitkopf & Härtel agreed to publish the sonata only if Fauré renounced his fee. Fauré agreed to these conditions, and the piece was subsequently published in February 1877, just weeks after its premiere by promising young star Marie Tayau and Fauré himself at the piano. 🎹

The premiere was a big success (the third movement had to be encored!) and at the age of 31, it represented a defining moment in Fauré's career. 🏆 Artists such as Saint- Saëns, Ysaÿe, Thibaud, Enescu, and others rapidly incorporated the work into their programmes.

Beethoven's Sonata No. 4, Corigliano's Red Violin Caprices and Szymanowski’s Nocturne and Tarantella were among the other works I performed in the recital. 🙃
