When you said pets...!! when we were kids my mother kept getting pets - we had 25 rabbits, four dogs, two cats, multiple hamsters/rats, and six horses at one point. Not even exaggerating. She always told me the pets were more important than me because they were her "children that will never grow up".

My ultra conservative Christian sister had 6. I think both religion and children are used to focus outward. All homeschooled themselves to avoid influence from the outside world, except the last 2 who got to go to school when they started high school. We could never spend time with the kids one on one but they were allowed to sleep over at a house who was having a children's church retreat for the weekend with adults she never met. The oldest is now 25 and last night he lit up like a Christmas tree talking about his new crush and discovering he might be gay. We suspected but it will make his mom's world come crashing down.

Yes, if society had a much better awareness and understanding of human relationships ( that should be based on collaboration and co-operation, not constant competition) then that could prevent narcissitic or any individual with an antagonistic or dysfunctional character from having children - we can't control nor tell other people what to do, or even have ot not have kids, but if such individuals are challenged, made to reflect and confronted as to why they want/have children, and that they are accountable to the nurturing and upbringing of their children, and especially that their children do not and will NEVER own them anything for their upbringing, then maybe, just maybe they will think twice....

Bingo! My parents grew up in poverty in Europe, on farms where the many children in the family were the source of labor. They both had a lack of education and had to mind each other because there was too much to do. They were parentified, so they parentified me. I am sure they were abused, so they abused me. They likely lived in chaos there. So they did what many of their siblings did and moved to America. Here, they worked in factories because it's the best jobs they could get. They had kids because that's all they knew to do. But none of them seemed to stop and think about what was really wrong with how they were raised or changing anything for the sake of their children. My parents are in their 80s and still don't know how to treat a person with dignity or respect. Thankfully I realized my programming and left the situation to try to heal myself.

My mom told me many times throughout the years that she had me so that she could have someone to love her. They really do it all for the attention.
