For the cost of the HOA fees you can just get a pass to your local city pool. it will probably be cheaper than the fees. Because a community hoa pool is still essentially a public pool.

Besides avoiding HOAs, best way to avoid HOA tyrants is to be elected in yourself. Then rule with an iron fist. Personally not a fan, but as mentioned HOAs can be useful for various community spaces: pools, halls, parks, dog runs, trash, etc

I've had a house with a pool ..you can't swim naked at night in a community pool
