We don't have any romantic ideas of blissfully strolling through our vegetable garden before every meal to gather a few items that we need (ie. a dozen leaves of lettuce, a cucumber, or a handful of beans). While our children tend to graze from the garden freely, it's often far more practical for us to harvest crops in larger batches. This practice of batch harvesting has 4 main benefits which I will outline in this video.

I enjoy going out and picking daily... I would be overwhelmed with all that stored trying to use it before it goes off.

How long can that stay fresh in those containers?

Depends how far your garden is. My garden is 30 feet from my kitchen door. I just pick whatever I need for that meal . Except the tomatoes and cucumbers, they're very warm when picked on a hot summer day . And nobody likes a luke warm vegetable salad. Those I pick a day ahead and keep in the fridge

The background music sounds like Sade - Somebody Already Broke My Heart. I love that song.

Is that lettuce spinner made from a washing machine? If so it's genius.

You harvest, wash and store vegetables in a cooler like a market garden grower. Do you you sell any of your harvest or do you have a large family to feed?

In South West Florida you would have had a few stems left and piles of bugs, fungus, iguana, who knows what instead of all that beautiful lettuce.

How do they stay fresh until you can eat them? It seems there would be a lot of waste through spoilage.

How do you "store" lettuce? It loses a ton of vitamins and minerals with each day it is cut from the source.
