Im 48 yrs old and am a Native Floridian, and I have not walked freely on the beach without a wrap or shorts over my bathing suit since i was a teenager.

I think I might just do that this week. Eff it. Why not?

Thank you 😊

It’s no wonder 85% of us have low self-esteem 💔

The thing that stands out to me the most here is the LANGUAGE around food & women’s bodies…

Because nothing in this video is actually about health… It’s all about weight & how you look, which is NOT the same thing. The message has always been: losing weight = good, gaining weight = bad, “go from flab to fab” as if you can’t have fat on your body & still be fabulous?

The sad thing is that while this is part 4 of this series… It still doesn’t even scratch the surface of what we grew up absorbing from the media.

So if you’ve grown up watching girls be told that having a piece of cake on their birthday is “bad”, or seen already-thin athletic characters in movies be judged for not being thin or athletic enough, or sold yoghurt that’s going to make you “l0se weight”, and then internalised the message behind it all: that your body is the most important thing about you & to prioritise the way you look over everything else… then you’re not alone — it’s not your fault.

Please be aware of these messages in the media when you hear them & try not to take them on board, because they’re not helping, they’re harming. It’ll take time to unlearn all of the toxic things we’ve been taught, but it IS possible 🥹🤝

You can learn to accept your body, heal your relationship with food, look after your mental health just as much as your physical health & create truly balanced habits (for e.g. still eating a full slice of birthday cake on your birthday).

Health isn’t all-or-nothing, it isn’t having 0% body fat, it isn’t punishing yourself. There’s soooo much more to you than the way that you look, okay? 🌍💗

I remember being so influenced by all of this as a young teenager. My eating disorder started in 8th grade when I heard the boys calling my friend chunky (and she was not at all) so I slowly started to spiral and started to look at food differently. I would chew it just to get the flavor and then spit it in a napkin and throw it away. I would “eat lunch” in the library so I wouldn’t have to be in the cafeteria and no one would see me not eating. I would consider a “laté” from Starbucks a meal because it had so many calories. I would go to the gym and burn off every calorie I consumed in that day. Set alarms not to eat. Rubber band on the wrist. Mary Kate and Ashley days …where if they were stick thin … I needed to be stick thin. I litterally would buy books about eating disorders to teach myself how to have an eating disorder. The list goes on. Man I wish I could go back and hug my little 8th grade self !!!! 🥺🥺🩵 When I finally healed I saw that my body needed GOOD FOOD TO SURVIVE AND THRIVEEEEE… I actuall ENDED UP HAVING a HIGH metabolism and I need fruits and veggies and grains and protein for fuel. I went from striving to fit into a size 0 to being a size 8 and feeling fit and strong and healthy!! I don’t want my kids to ever go through what I did. Eating disorders can be healed. Instead of being in control of food … be in control of your body !! Move it … love it .. cherrish it !!! 🌸💕 thank your body everyday for being strong for you !! 34 years old this year …. My eating disorder started at 14. To anyone reading this struggling … just know that it will always be with you everyday … but you don’t have to let it win. You are soooo strong and beautiful in every way. If your summer clothes don’t fit … ITS OKAY !! Go buy some new ones. If you are struggling and counting calories / restricting …. Know that your body needs nutrition! Eat a large watermelon … or eggs … make some zucchini noodles or roast a chicken. Whole Foods will not make you fat. Binging on junk after starving yourself is not the answer. Wishing you luck stranger… it’s time to stop tormenting your body because of all the nonsense we were fed growing up. ! sending you all the love. Comment if you need any advice on healing your ED and I will respond

Boys and men (those men who never grew out of their adolescence), can be and are cruel. I admit I had my disrespectful comments. And yes I did get called out for it - deservedly so. I learned my lessons and got over myself and accepted that I, like many other men, had been cruel. But so are many women.

As a culture, we need to get back to the concept of health first and skip the body shaming. We are all built differently because genetics makes us individuals.

We are not born to be perfect. We are called to strive to be better persons tomorrow than we are today.

This resembles perfectly what made me inscure about my body and myself and it hurts even more because thinking about it i'm a little underweight so I have a body that will usually be called "flat" so watching content like yours makes me feel better about myself, thank you for this ❤

I’m old enough to remember those commercials. Instant tears remembering what it felt like to be that teenager. 2000s were rough for us.

You might like the book "More Than A Body" by Lexi and Lindsey Kite. It addresses how the media affects women's body image and also talks about how to be resilient toward such messages. It also is about body image and self esteem in general :)
