price on menu is price you are obligated to pay.
adding fees and taxes after agreeing on a price, by ordering, is illegal here in Norway.
Tipping is optional, not required.

As a European I do find it a little confusing, but I am bamboozled that there could be a SERVICE FEE isn't a tip?!?!

Here in California there is a new law stating that restaurants will be able to be doing this anymore through hidden fees everything has to be upfront from now on

In a lot of European countries it's illegal to add hidden fees. If you agreed to pay 10$ for a meal they can't just make you pay 13$ afterwards. It usually doesn't need a specific law because it goes against basic contract laws.

I'm so glad I got out of the garbage service industry. Wanna charge a service fee and then expect you to tip, but won't pay the waiter/waitress a livable wage. It's insanity.

I totally agree, they should rise the price instead of charging a percentage for tip.

I loved that when I got to travel to Europe. Everything is exactly what the price tag says. No mind games.

in Australia you MUST advertise the final price of any product and services and include any tax or fees involved. It is illegal to charge any price that is not advertised

As an American, Iā€™ve never seen all those ā€œhidden feesā€ ever in meals, and my state includes tax into the price, so Iā€™ve never had to worry about that. Although I donā€™t like this new culture to tip before service since you are supposed to be tipping for a good serviceā€¦

The US example is called drip pricing and it is in fact illegal at least in the EU. It is also mandated by law in all of EU that tax must be included in consumer prices

Here in Europe it's illegal. The price on the item has to show exactly what you'll pay. In stores, in restaurants, everywhere.

The only place I regularly go with my wife has a no-tipping policy. They also pay their staff enough that they don't have trouble with retention, it's locally owned, and the owner works there. It's great.

Australia is also easy. If a price says $20 you pay $20. No fees/taxes or anything on top. Also no tip is expected at all.

@Vash.Baldeus

The issue with US is the prices never include the TAX, which is stupid.

The fact that restaurants include all those hidden fees and yet the CUSTOMER is still expected to tip is ridiculous. How about they just pay their servers a livable wage
