How Options Contracts Were First Created 2,600 Years Ago - How Money Works #Shorts

An options contract is an advanced financial instrument that basically gives someone the right to purchase something in the future for a pre-determined price.

If I have an option to buy apple shares for $20 at the end of 2021 and they are actually trading for $30 dollars when that time comes I make a profit of $10 dollars for every option I had.

Now you might think that this is a modern system but in reality, it was pioneered by a Greek philosopher in 600BC.

Thales saw an opportunity and put deposits on every olive press in Greece, when summer came around and the olives were ready to be turned into oil, he simply refused to let anybody use them because he had already paid the deposit on them for use at the time.

Eventually farmers agreed to pay double the normal rental fee to Thales to let them use the presses before their crops went to waste, and so the first options profit was derived.

So he basically held a bunch of farmer's equipment hostage until the crops started going bad to get the farmers to pay him double? This is also one of the earliest recorded "dick-moves" in history.

Let's not forget why he did it. The other philosophers made fun of him for not caring about wealth and always having his head in the clouds. Aristotle later said of this "let this be a reminder that philosophers can be rich whenever they so please but are often more concerned with bigger problems" (paraphrasing).

Thales did not think money the greatest virtue, he was a philosopher and loved thoughts, just to prove how easy it is to make money if you can think he pulled this off.

This was more cornering the market than an option

Please do a video similar to this based on Futures trading and how that affects the Oil and Gas Market so much.

Options control 100 shares of the underlying. So every call with a strike price of 20 would be trading for ~$1000 at the time of expiration if the underlying were 30. Have to also consider how much you bought the option for. Too hasty an explanation of how an option works but I guess it’s just too complicated to explain in a short

Not $10 profit per contract. $10 profit per share. So $1,000 profit per contract.

I mean, either that or they could have punched him unconscious and used the olive presses without his blessing. Holding necessary equipment hostage for a payout is a very punchable move
