That is so wonderful that you got to get your uncle's call sign. My late aunt's husband is a ham radio operator. He is the one who corrupted me and put the bug in my ear when I was a teenager, and was absolutely thrilled when I sat for and passed my exam when I was 26. Now, I am trying to get my oldest son who is 12 to get his license. His paternal grandfather was a ham, even though he was not active when I knew him. He still retained his call letters. What I would like to see is for my oldest, who is named after his paternal grandfather, take over his call sign when he gets licensed. I'm going to be having a little conversation with him soon to gauge his interest and get him started if he is interested. It will be a wonderful father-son project.

Very cool Richard! I got interested as a teen (1970's) when I saw an older friend up the street in his garage talking to people on his ham gear. Years later (1994) I started looking into it, was on a BBS board and saw a guy on there and he pointed me in the direction to learn more locally. I got the book "Now you're talking" and studied it for a month every night and went and passed my technician test! Shortly after that I passed my 5 wpm morse test and got my Technician Plus upgrade then later went for my General and passed!

Hello Richard, yes fun times at the Norfolk Amateur Radio Club in the '70s and also with the gang at Owen's factory in Rackheath. I also did the RAE in '76 (I still have my '76 original exam paper!) but then faffed around a bit on 2m before Reg Brake G8QR taught me CW and I ended up going to the Post Office Maritime Radio building in London in '79 to get the morse ticket.

I’m Kevin-M0AQK and I got into the hobby after a friend of the family,a white stick operator let me send a greetings messages over I think 2 meters in the 1980’s.Remembering that in the 1990’s I found myself getting the big white booklet “How to become a radio amateur?”From the post office.St Helen’s technical college not doing the RAE lessons any more,I bought all the study materials from ARC communications in earl’s town. To pass the CW in 1996 I used to listen to Gordon Adams G3LEQ transmitting to any radio amateurs interested in CW over 2 meters.I’ve still got Some of his CW slow morse lessons he used to sell on cassette.Sadly now SK.
