This reminds me a lot of Gentian Violet. Its a dye often used in laboratory preparations BUT also makes a great antiseptic/antifungal. Diluted, it can be applied to wounds and kills yeast. Soaking tampons in a diluted solution was an old method of dealing with infections.

We saw a replica 1850s shirtwaist, 1/2 dyed with original aniline mauve, 1/2 with a modern replica color. Verrrry close, but you could see the difference in tone.
