When in the Coast Guard back in the early 70's, I got to spend 3 months and 2 days on a USCG LORAN 'C' station, which was on Iwo Jima. The island isn't very big at only 7 miles long and 3 miles wide. There were about 20 Japanese national defense personnel and 40 Coast Guardsmen. I was there TAD and enjoyed every minute of it because there was plenty of time to explore. The station had a small library of books pertinent to the WW2 battle, so I would go to those areas and visualize what happened. There wasn't a spot on the island that wasn't pock marked by the impact of exploding ordinance. Shell and bullet fragments were everywhere.
