Natural consequences refer to the logical outcome that occurs as a result of a child’s behavior.

The most common example: if a toddler refuses to eat their dinner, they will be hungry later.

By allowing toddlers to experience these natural consequences, we can teach them valuable life lessons and encourage them to take responsibility for their actions.

In this case:

🟢 Abby was blowing bubbles, then she decided to spill some of the water.
🔴 I told her, “if you spill it, you won’t be able to blow any more bubbles”
🟡 She decided to spill it all.
🔵The natural consequence: she couldn’t blow any more bubbles.

I didn’t have to say anything, not yelling, not lecturing…

By simply letting her experience this simple natural consequence, she is learning many life skills like problem-solving, accountability, decision-making, and responsibility.

💕To keep in mind:
✅ I let her experience natural consequences ONLY if I am comfortable with any decision she makes. In this case, I was comfortable with her spilling the water or not.
✅ If the “natural consequence” is not clear, then I try to find another parenting strategy to solve a problem.
✅ “Natural consequences” is only one parenting strategy, it might not be the right thing to do every time or with every child, but is worth a try!
