The historical connection between rich men and homophobia is so interesting to me. The sense of “wealthy men are annoying and also gay” is a stereotype you can still see remnants of. It has little basis in reality, so I wonder what the thought process was, especially in a society where the gender expectations were very different. Was it just labelling wealthy man as any negative stereotype just because? Or the idea that only rich people could “afford” to be gay without being ostracized or losing privileges having a spouse/children could give you in those days?
