I'm too old for backpacks now, other than day bags. Years ago I had a colleague who was travelling around the USA with a backpack. Of course, he couldn't see it when it was on his back and his expensive camera was stolen from it while the thief's accomplice engaged him in conversation. So I wouldn't use one for luggage.
