Supposedly the origin of that joke is that a famous violinist (usually attributed to Jascha Heifetz) came out of a bad rehearsal for a Carnegie Hall recital, and some lost tourists asked him how to get to Carnegie Hall, and Heifetz, rather discouraged, replied, "Practice, practice, practice."
