This week I got sidetracked after discovering some green hosta hiding behind our daylilies. I split it and extended to hosta border out in front of the ostrich fern huglekultur. This will make a fantastic "perennial lettuce patch"
In a previous video, I explained that hostas are edible, both raw and cooked. I'll be sharing my reaction to trying the hosta soon.
This shade garden is going to be an ornamental garden that is filled with edible perennials. Most edimental gardens are composed of edible flowers, but that is not what I intend here. No one is going to eat flower salads for 30 weeks of the year.
I want to fill this shade garden with veggies that I can either use on a regular basis, or that provide early spring and late fall greens, when nothing else is able to grow. But I want it to be so beautiful that you would never know it was a highly productive and well-used veggie patch. I need to do a bit more research to round out the shapes and textures in this garden composition.
The other limitation of this garden is the shallow depth of the soil on top of the bedrock. While there are many perennial root veggies with beautiful blooms that might double as an ornamental flower, I would not get usable roots if they are planted in this part of the garden. So, plants like angelica and salsify are not an option for this area of my property
This coming week, I need to get back to the main veggie garden that started this series. I am only halfway done, and the season should be in full swing by now.

Oh lord... "I need to stop getting sidetracked and focus on the main garden" could be my mantra right now! 🫣 I'm working to add more edimentals as well. Especially in the section I consider my "pollinator corridor." That way, we all eat!
