Super Typhoon Kong-Rey is easily one of the largest eye's in a major tropical system you will ever see on Earth. Thing is absolutely massive.
Within the eye of a typhoon, one can expect a region of relative calm with light winds and clear skies, surrounded by the eyewall, a ring of severe thunderstorms where the most extreme weather and highest winds occur. Outside the eye, the winds increase rapidly, leading to violent storms and heavy rainfall.
The eye of a typhoon is the relatively calm and clear area at the center of the storm. It forms because of the intense rotational winds around it, creating a low-pressure zone in the center. The eye usually ranges from about 20 to 40 kilometers (12 to 25 miles) in diameter, though it can be smaller or larger in some cases.
Expected Weather When Observing the Eye of a Typhoon
When someone is within the eye of a typhoon, the weather is surprisingly calm, with very light winds, little to no rain, and sometimes even clear skies. This break in the storm can be misleading, as it lasts only as long as the eye passes over a location. Once the eye moves, the intense winds and rain on the opposite side of the typhoon’s eyewall quickly resume, sometimes even stronger than the initial impact, as the second half of the storm hits.
Here’s a summary of what happens when experiencing the eye:
Calm Winds: Winds die down almost completely within the eye.
Clearer Skies: The sky often clears, allowing sunlight or starlight through.
Brief Reprieve: This period of calm may last from a few minutes to half an hour or more, depending on the storm's speed.
Sudden Return of the Storm: Once the eye passes, the intense weather resumes as the eyewall, which contains the strongest winds and heaviest rain, hits again.
