I used the random dungeon generator tables in that once. I learned why so many early modules featured dungeons built by insane wizards.

I'm on a quest to read all the editions of the Dungeon Master's Guide and recently found this one at a local used bookshop. Everyone in my game group takes turns playing and DMing over time, so we got a good hearty laugh out of this bit.

It is easy to look over our shoulders, and benefiting from the progress of time and thought, make fun those who have lived before us. When I read or hear these words from the DMG, I hear passion for the game, and a sincerity to protect player wonder and surprise over time. One strategy (and yes in time others became clear) Remember before we laugh, unlike us, he wrote and spoke with very little previous works in this field! So Cheers Mr G, and thank you! We all need to remember, like much in modern live “we are standing on the shoulders of giants” as we attempt in our lives to reach higher.

The AD&D 1e DMG is the greatest book ever written for any edition of D&D. I still use mine in my 5e game.

What really upset people about the book was the part where if your players sacrifice a baby in real life, their characters all gain a half level.

That was great -- I laughed out loud. I really enjoy 5e but I have fond memories of 1e, even the restrictions and limitations on players and characters (that were often ignored).

OMG - im 52 - i never played D&D in my life but as a child I for one reason or another had my hands on that very book SO MANY TIMES. i mustve loved the cover. Oh i want to browse through that so badly!
