The name of the tiny island located in the Mediterranean Sea is Malta.
The islands' strategic position in the Mediterranean made them a focal point of the war and an ideal location for European access to Africa.
Rommel had personally asked Hitler to invade Malta, claiming that so long as it is in British hands, the Germans would never win in Africa. The resulting plan was Operation Hercules.
Malta holds the record for the heaviest, sustained bombing attack: some 154 days and nights. During the four-year period, a staggering 6,700 bombs were dropped, with a total of 16,000 tons of bombs.
The entire country lived underground in these bomb shelters.
The so-called βsiege of Maltaβ lasted two years. Itβs testament to the resilience of the Maltese population that they resisted the Nazi attempts to destroy their morale.
In the end, the Nazis failed to gain control over Malta, which in turn played a major part in their defeat in North Africa.
