Are latches on hooks for lifting slings mandatory?
The answer is... technically no. Hoist hooks are required to have latches, but lifting slings are not required to be manufactured with hooks that contain latches. Now, most manufacturers strongly recommend that you put latches on your sling hooks, and there are some rules that you need to account for.
If the hook has provisions for a latch, then the latch should be on there. If a sling is manufactured with hooks that have latches and the latches get damaged, then the sling must be pulled from service, and the latches must be replaced to maintain compliance.
Certain areas of the country also require hooks to have latches, so be aware of your local regulations. Many company policies also dictate that a sling hook must have a latch. Not following company safety regulations can lead to OSHA fines.
