Base pay in the guard was always higher than in the legions. The rate, however, would vary. During the Julio-Claudian period, guardsmen made about 3 times the normal rate of pay of a legionnaire. However, pay in cash was not the only form of compensation that a member of the praetorian guard could expect. Food and certain pieces of military equipment were often provided to guardsmen as part of their usual compensation. Smaller donatives were also not uncommon on special occasions like the birthday of the emperor. Many emperors tried to reform the guard, especially their pay structure, but most ended up murdered by the guard.
