Vrsic mountain pass played a crucial role in the Isonzo front, during the first world war. To supply the defending army of Austria-Hungary against Italy, the army called in the Russian prisoners of war, who built and maintained the mountain road under harsh conditions from both nature and man. They also built a small Russian Chapel, which is today a memorial to the first world war and its attrocities.

Vrsic was essential to the supply line, connecting Upper Carniola with the Soca (Isonzo) valley, among the high mountains of the Julian Alps. It remained so until the breakthrough of the combined Austria-Hungary and Germany forces in the Twelfth Battle of the Isonzo, also known as the Miracle of Caporetto or Kobarid.

Today, Vrsic is the highest road pass in Slovenia and a beautiful site for hikers and history enthusiasts. A monument to nature, development and the past.
