OK so congressmen and women get access to briefings on all kinds of developments in the world that you, or I or the markets are not yet privy to.
This is called âinsider knowledgeâ and itâs normally illegal to make stock trades based off of this information.
If you were a CEO who was about to release a terrible quarterly investor report, you would not be allowed to sell of your stock, thatâs insider tradingâŚ
But politicians in the US are not subject to these rules, which is why many notable figures sold off their portfolios before anybody else realized how bad Covid would get.
The thing is though, they have to disclose their trades publicly, which means people can just copy them.
This strategy has actually proven successful for a lot of trader, but fortunately it looks like regulation might finally be catching up with this special little privilege.

They don't have to disclose their trades until weeks after they make them. I've considered doing this, but most times by the time the trade has been disclosed, the news is already out and the move has happened

If insider trading should be illegal for anyone, it should be for congressman. I don't know if they should even be allowed to hold investments. Sounds like a conflict of interest.

I had a relative who worked in a bank. Due to getting privy to lots of insider information, he was not legaly allowed to invest in the stock market. Seems like that would be reasonable to ask of congressmen in the united states.

Insider trading is illegal FOR YOU, but not for insiders. Laws are for poor people.
And they don't have to disclose their trades right away, but within a timeframe, which is 45 days. At that point, you've likely already missed the boat. And the penalty for not reporting in time is literally nothing. There is no penalty. This month, July 2021, we are seeing filings that were supposed to be reported in the year 2020. Literally nothing happens when filing late. Absolutely literally nothing. Did I mention that it's perfectly acceptable and legal and there is no consequence at all for filing late?

Is there a "congressionally-owned index fund". Basically an index that tracks the portfolio of congressmen, meaning you could reap the benefits without actually doing any work
