Even if they airborne dropped troops in large enough numbers the ability to send reinforcements and supplies will be a hurdle with the royal navy.

The invasion was wargamed back in the 70s I believe. Even if the landing had been successful the Germans would have been stopped south of London with no way of sustaining their forces. This would means that with the loss of men and equipment there would have been no Operation Barbarossa in 1941.

If Germany had won air superiority against the Royal Airforce, the British navy would have been in a lot of trouble. You cannot just look at ship numbers without taking the air forces into account. There's a reason Aircraft Carriers replaced Battleships as the centerpiece of navy fleets.

And now, the Royal Navy has 3 men in a rowing boat - arguing over the one remaining paddle, endlessly going in circles in the north sea

I love how this entire scenario was wargamed extensively in the 60s and 70s, and even giving Germany every advantage it was possible to imagine, Germany still lost badly every time.

Yet people who played HoI will still come here and argue about it.

Amongst some in Britain at the time, there were some that thought it would be a good thing if the Germans really did give it a go. Just because the inevitable German defeat and the Wehrmacht drowning in the Channel would probably have been the end for Hitler.

Aside from all that, with no RAF or RN, how would the Germ add a have gotten on shore? Part of their plan was to beach barges at high tide, wait for the tide to go out, then walk ashore.

That’s six hours of just waiting on a beached barge.

Amphibious operations are some of the most difficult to pull off. It's impossible if your opponent has a monster navy that eclipses your merry band of tugboats that you tried to pass off as a navy.

I've always appreciated the film Darkest Hour for having that scene where Churchill comforts his wife and straight up says "we're going to be fine, we have the royal navy and a moat around Britain" where as the film Battle of Britain doesn't even mention the navy ONCE.

Too bad, WW2 infotainments never focus on this fact.

The bombing campaign was really designed to cause the British to surrender without needing to invade. It was all bluff.
The British however weren't willing to surrender post Dunkirk and by mid Summer they were very resolute. The only chance the Germans had was to make an offer in late May 1940 which might have been accepted.

Amateurs concentrate on tactics ... Professionals concentrate on logistics. While the Germans MIGHT have been able to force through a landing, (assuming the RN couldn't move fast enough,) the Luftwaffe and Kriegsmarine would not be able to keep that force supplied in the teeth of opposition from the RN. Air transport in 1940/41 couldn't begin to airlift enough stocks of ammo, fuel and so on that even an initial infantry heavy force of over 100,000 men would require.

Foraging for supplies might help somewhat, but the Brits are stubborn and would likely go "scorched earth" in their defense.

IIRC that’s why the British were so concerned with not allowing the Germans to gain control of the French Navy

@markpaulo269

so it would have been the royal navy versus the luftwaffe?

Not to mention Germany only had one air group trained for anti ship operations and even if the channel was contested from the air the Royal Navy would have sold its fleet to sink a German invasion force (which it probably wouldn’t even have to do since again Germany had one air group capable of mounting naval strike missions)

Not just successfully, but at all, it was impossible.
