LiDAR, or Light Detection and Ranging, generates a point cloud by using 128 lasers to scan 360 degrees in a circle. Each point in the cloud is a distance measurement made by a laser. Similar to a laser tape measure, the laser reflects off an object, and the time it takes for the light to travel the round trip is used to calculate distance. The LiDAR sensor itself does not segment the point cloud; a separate algorithm or AI is required to detect objects like cars, people, etc.
