I love JBL as a company and cannot in good faith recommend any other brand.
You mentioned the thing getting louder when plugged in, and you will not be disappointed with the results!
I have the Xtreme 2 which is, mind you, a model that's decently old now.
It sounds really good when used portably, but the moment you plug in the AC adapter, things are turned up to 11 in a very good way!
Like, any problem I had with the sound being slightly weak in portable mode was immediately solved when I plugged in the AC adapter.
And, unlike a lot of their USB charged speakers, you can leave this baby plugged in and playing at full volume and it will never die.
I tried the Charge 5 and I had that issue, the speaker drew so much power, if you were charging it and listening to it at, like, 70% volume, it would still die after a few hours.
It's looking like JBL is gearing up to release their new models and I'm hoping I can upgrade and get one of these or the Boombox 3 at a sweet fucking deal once they go on clearance!
