I’m a female and I’ve never liked that phrase because as you just mentioned, we should not be dependent on someone else to make us happy….that’s not the job of anyone, but ourselves to get to or to be happy.
Also, I believe in the context that it’s often used is to not argue with a woman and just let her have her way…she’s never wrong and if you want peace in the home, you’ll do this. I disagree with this also. The man’s feelings are just as important as the woman’s.

I just believe that happy wife happy life is true to a certain extent if the woman is not the type of person that is hard to please. This can not be a married man. The phrase "happy wife, happy life" comes from the idea that wives are usually the spine of a family, holding the family together inturn neglecting theirselves which is why the husband needs to focus on making her happy, by fulfilling his wife needs as she fulfills the needs of everyone else .
