An estimated 8 million metric tons of plastic waste enters the world's ocean each year - the equivalent of dumping a garbage truck of plastic waste into the ocean every minute. Plastic waste is now found in almost every marine habitat. 🐟
You might think to yourself, well, I don't live in the ocean, so it doesn't really affect me, but that couldn't be farther from the truth. 🙅♀️ We ingest about a credit card's worth of plastic every WEEK. It's in our food and in our water. Microplastics is the true pandemic of this generation. Microplastics:
☠️ carry toxic chemicals and pollutants (remember, plastic is derived from petroleum) like BPA, phthalates, etc.
☠️ disrupts hormones
☠️ causes inflammation
☠️ translocate across cell barriers (due to their small size) which leads to systemic health issues
The extent of its harm is still a topic of research. So what can we do? While we believe the true solution lives at the manufacturing level (through serious regulation), you can make some small choices to limit your exposure:
✅ ditch the plastic bottled water and use a filtration system instead.
✅ buy plastic-free alternatives such as stainless steel, silicone or glass for drinkware and food storage.
✅ bring your own bags or boxes to the grocery store.
✅ choose better choice packaging for your personal care products when possible (but remember to prioritize INGREDIENTS).
✅ reduce the amount of take out you consume.
✅ decline single-use plastics when possible.
✅ if you do use plastic, look for plastics which can be recycled by your local recycling program.
✅ buy natural fiber clothing.
The real solution lies in regulation of manufacturing processes, but these steps can help lower your local exposure.
