The flaw with this argument is that it assumes that the morality of slavery is relative to the society you grew up in. No, slavery is objectively evil, and that fact transcends time and location.

That's part of why I have always said that erecting statues of real people is dumb. Celebrate traits and qualities, not people. All people are flawed and can be found to have done things in their lives that can be considered (either then or since) to be negative. Avoid the whole issue by NOT putting these kinds of memorials up to "honor" them.
