I think the deeper root cause to this issue is that so many people don't know what subjectivity and objectivity even are. They don't have the verbal or conceptual vocab about it to begin with. They're so used to their own perspective feeling like fact, and never having that challenged/not having it challenged often enough, that something being an agree/disagree type of topic vs a correct/incorrect type of topic is just a totally novel idea to them. I'd argue that this is the central most important distilled-down reason why humanities education is so vital for everyone regardless of their interests.

As someone who loves Ready Player One, you haven't lost me. I both agree and disagree with you on many books that you've discussed. You can talk about disliking books all you want but the only thing that will make you "lose me" is if you insult ppl specifically for liking books you hate. I don't think you'll do that so i think we're good

I know at least one German book blogger who regularly reviews books like this: "One cannot get immersed in the story, because there are these problems ...", "One cannot like the protagonist, because ..." and so on instead of writing, "It was hard for me to get immersed in the story ...", "Personally, I didn't like the protagonist, because..." I once wrote a blog with advice about reviewing books and I said that it is best to write "I"-sentences to show in the review that it is your personal opinion.

I've had someone get that mad at me for saying I DNFed the ACOTAR series after book 3 and told me I "HAD" to go back and read it right now. The behavior is genuinely unhinged, and I don't enjoy talking to anyone who's like that and tells people they can't have their own opinions like that.

I completely agree. Grand sweeping statements are much weaker than people think. Critical thinking skills are crucial for society's wellbeing.

Your glasses are super cute!

No I have to disagree with you here. That isnโ€™t your opinion. Ready player one is objectively terrible! ๐Ÿ˜€

I believe a significant problem with online discourse is that too many believe they have pearls of wisdom to impart when they are in fact grains of sand.

The Tom T. Hall song "I Love" is covered in I statements and it's a beloved classic. If he can get it right, I'm sure there's hope for book lovers engaging in online discourse.

I run into this a lot teaching writing as well, this sense that something they believe (fact, feeling, upbringing, opinion, etc.) can be stated point blank without evidence or qualification.

Example: I love Andy Weir's hard sci-fi! I hate Andy Weir's character writing, and I hate the ending of Project Hail Mary.

I mean, that ending was bad, but people love it. More power to them!

When I first read Ready Player One I gobbled it down like it was candy. Then, a couple years later I read it again and took my time and thought, no, this is absolutely objectively bad.

I liked Ready Player One when I read it in 2018, but at that time I was a little more easily impressed than I am now.
