I think the problem with comparing yourselves to your peers is that they’re on the same journey as you and naturally are going to get better at the same time as you so when your rolling doesnt improve you think you’re not improving but you’re not taking into account your peers progress. When fresh meat comes in that’s thinks they can dominate through sheer strength or bravado youre really reminded of your progress then.

I was this guy for the first 2 years. Then something clicked and I realized all the guys I thought were good actually had no idea what they were doing either.

Good advice, but I would also suggest some privates and a grappling dummy and a handful of online tutorials. A very small part of my game actually came from group classes. I admire people who can become proficient from just group classes, unfortunately I’m not one of them

I've got to be humble and say, if I were to grapple 6 months ago me, I might not win.
That guy is incredibly smart.

If its common it cant be true. Anyone who is concened enough to go talk with their coach like that is probably just overly critical.

Words well said. I was going through this as a brown belt. I started focusing what I was lacking on and worked on it and slowly I'm starting to feel better. THANK YOU

I practiced no Gi bjj for 3 years, was never as good, technical or skilled as others but I was good at three things naturally chokes, take downs and leg locks and that alone made most people fear a no gentlemen's agreement roll

Classes are not the real world. You're not pulling guard, using x guard or any of that fancy sh*t in the real world. A triangle choke will get you body slammed unconscious in a real world with no matt, no referee, no rules. The real world is not naga

Just learn what you can and get as good as you can and stop worrying about other people, belts and etc. I've seen black belt bjj practitioners slammed unconscious by judo guys, wrestlers and knocked out by strikers
