How To Build A Smal Patio DIY step 5. Cutting Leveling Poles

Step 5 in building a small DIY paver patio is cutting the sand leveling poles. The poles are extremely important because they're used with a screed to flatten and level the sand base.

I use steel pipe that you can buy at any Home Depot or Lowes as poles. Cut them with an angle grinder or chop saw with a metal cutting blade.

Make sure to wear goggles and gloves because the metal will spark.

Once the poles are cut, lay them into your sand pit.

Cut the poles about an inch shorter than your patio so there's a little wiggle room. My patio is 6 foot wide, so I cut the poles 5'11".

Check back if you want to see the entire project in a long video or each individual step as a short.

I prefer using a chop saw but grinder works just as well

Sawzall with metal cutting blade is faster and 100x safer.
