We get them along the coast of South Australia. I used to go out onto the reefs with my dad, while he would spear fish at night using a light. I had one of the most amazing experiences with a large Wobbygong on one of these outings. They are amazing, but up close even better. It was in shallow water and it wasnt aggressive at all. Just prefered that it wasn't caught between me and the beach. It swam just ahead of us for a while and then moved on. One of those memories you never forget and for this, they are one of my favourite ocean creatures.
This was around 2012, and phones didn't have the cameras on them that we do now. I'd have loved to film it.

Iāve heard theyre estimated to be responsible for the largest number of unreported shark attacks in Oz - most are from small Sharks and just flesh wounds.
They can get aggressive taking speared fish and end up latching onto a diver by mistake. Some idiots also will grab their tails as they are very lazy and easy to swim up to, but unlike some sharks, they can turn and bite their own tail (or anyone grabbing it).
They can get quite big tooā¦ Iāve been diving and seen one under a rock ledge that would definitely require hospital if it attacked - it was huge. But without spearing, and left alone, theyāre chill.
