1x 10g Router, 1x 10g Switch, 4x x550-T2 = $1000 I can only imagine what ONE of those 400g cards cost lol

Thanks to DCs upgrading you can get 100g optics for 5$, 100g Nics for 120$. Mikrotik sells 100g switches from 600$. Was cheaper than buying 10g new.

400Gbps. Is it limited by PCIE interface?

So 400 gigabit is around 50 Gigabyte bandwidth

25Gbps. Pretty hard to saturate tho outside of my provider, but can get to some clouds and some servers and CDNs at pretty good speeds. Internal network transitioning from 25/40 to 100.

I have Gigabit but most site and services top out around the 300 Mbit mark.

so, maxing out a PCIe 5.0 x16 link... interesting.

Working in consumer space for 3.5 years...I'm worried about the thermals and the fucking voltage/wattage on this fuxkin card, espeically when we are heading into an energy crisis soon

400 GbE has a MAC rate of 400 gbit/second, not 400 gigabytes per second.

Fiber interconnects are the way of the future, we just need them to be a commodity on the endpoints. Fiber bandwidth is the most practical way to sustain our world due to physical limits with metal/copper conductors.

It’s a shame how many resources we waste many localizing hardware - this is a big deal in data centers for pooling resources, especially if they are in the same vicinity.

Fiber is nearly half as latent as copper as well due to low refractive index - this could be tens of nanoseconds without transceiver overhead in the same rack which may be tolerable for most applications that invoke cache misses as main memory
