I've actually seen some stuff explain why this happened.
Essentially the director of Joker was angry that people like the film because he hated comic book hero stories and so tried to maje an unlikable character, but by doing so he made the character relatable, tragic, and intense which is what the audience loved especially in a joker origin.
To salt the wounds more the film was not his original story (obviously) and was part of a universe he despised yet is his most successful film EVER. So how does he follow up?
Joker 2, proof that he became the one thing he swore to destroy...a joke. Basically he intended to do 2 things: own the chuds that enjoyed his film, and create his own unique story. To accomplish this he created a court room musical. By doing do he's only proving his success was predependent on the source material and setting rather than his director skills.
But both main actors did do their best and brought out their characters to the best of tgeir abilities, so props to them.
